Memory Upgrades for your Computer

By: Eric Minden

Computers come with many different grades of memory. When purchasing a new computer you may go with one that has a minimal amount of memory because it is usually cheaper, and this is fine. There is no use in spending the extra money on a computer with more memory than you think you will need. However, when it comes to needing more memory, there are inexpensive ways to boost your memory to what you deem necessary.

If your computer has begun to run much slower than it should, or you are unable to download any applications, you may be running low on memory. Purchasing new memory for your old or new computer, is well worth the money, and is less expensive than purchasing a new computer. Many people are very surprised and happy that by just putting in more memory, their computer runs faster than before.

Installation of a new memory stick is very simple. All you will need is phillips screw driver to remove the casing or back of your computer. Once you have access to the memory slots, it's just a simple matter of pushing the memory module into the spare slot firmly, closing the hatch or putting the case back on, putting the screw back in, and rebooting the computer.

It can be a more complicated if your memory slots are fully populated, but a competent memory supplier should be able to provide you with advice on the upgrade options available and whether or not you will need to remove one or more of the existing modules to make room for larger ones.

Generally it is recommended you install 512mb if you are running Windows XP on your computer. Microsoft says that the minimum is far less, yet the decision is yours to make, after all it is your computer. 512mb of installed memory will give you enough room for Windows XP to load, and a little spare for a couple of web browser windows, an email client, antivirus application, and a spreadsheet or word processor.

If you do photo editing in addition to the basics, think about going up to 1GB of installed memory. If you are a home video buff or play a lot of computer games, then 2GB is really going to keep you productive.

Before you purchase a new memory module, you need to be sure to check the compatibility with your computer, make sure it is right the first time to save you many trips to the store. Also, check the return policy for that module, just in case this is the wrong one you will be able to return it for your money or a new product. Lastly, check the manufactures warranty, if anything goes wrong you want to be sure you can get a new one straight from the manufacturer.

You may just need a memory upgrade for your computer, so keep this in mind the next time your computer program doesn’t load as quickly as it should. Don’t buy a new computer unless you absolutely need one. Avoiding the purchase of a new computer will keep the money in your pocket and keep your old computer up and running.
